Love a good margarita, but you can’t have citrus? Check out these 4 alternative ways to make amazing citrus-free margaritas!

It’s hard out there for a girl that loves margs but can’t have citrus! Citrus is high in tyramine and can be a migraine trigger for some people. I can’t handle much citrus, so a lime based drink is out of the question. However, if we work off the idea that you can margarita any fruit with agave and tequila, then there are several options for delicious citrus-free margaritas.

Alcohol and Migraine

Some people think that people with migraine can’t or shouldn’t drink, but that’s not really true. Sure, for some people alcohol will cause migraines no exception. But for a lot of people only drinking certain types of alcohol like red wine or beer might trigger attacks. For me, I try to drink in moderation and only when I’m feeling good, but everyone deserves to enjoy a drink if they want. Who hasn’t regretted what they drank at one point while still fully enjoying themselves.

However, some people find that alcohol is a serious trigger for them. In that case, you could still enjoy these options as mocktails and top your fruit juice off with some sparkling water for a delicious drink option.

Making Fruit Juices

All you need for these citrus-free margaritas is a blender if you want to make your juices from scratch. You can also find almost any fruit juice you want at a health food store and skip straight to the mixing. If you are looking for an easy peach juice to buy, I recommend this amazing peach juice. When you are making your own fruit juices, you want to think about the water content and pectin content of the fruit. Pectin is what makes jelly jiggle, and it can make your juices kind of thick. So, if your juice is turning out kind of thick, you may need to add more water to it. Watermelon has got to be the easiest juice to make because it’s mostly water. It blends so easy, and you don’t even have to strain it!

Citrus-Free Margarita Flavor Combos

The flavor possibilities are endless, because you can mix up anything that you want really. Let’s talk about some of my favorite combinations. First I went with a classic combo of watermelon and mint. If you’ve ever had a watermelon salad you know how well they go together. The second flavor will come as no surprise if you seen my other posts, but peach basil is an unlikely winner! Next up is blueberry ginger. Blueberry juice makes a sunning color in your glass, and I love the way the sweet fruit pairs with the spice from the ginger. This one also makes a great twist on a Moscow mule! Lastly, I made a raspberry lemon balm which gives a hint of lemon without any actual citrus. In the future, I would honestly probably get the cran-raspberry juice and make it even easier. Peach Basil Margarita

Prep Time 10 minutes

Servings 2 drinks

Equipment

  • Blender

Ingredients

  • 4 peaches peeled optional
  • 1 cup water
  • 3 oz. tequila
  • 1 tbsp agave
  • 1 bunch basil leaves

Instructions

  • Cut the peaches in half and remove the pit. You can peel the peach if you want a better peach color for your drink or a smoother juice. Leaving the skin on still makes a great drink. Blend on high with about 1 cup of water until smooth.
  • To make the drink, muddle a few basil leaves in the bottom of a glass. Mix 1 cup peach juice, 1.5 oz. tequila, and 1/2 tbsp agave. Makes 2 drinks.

Notes

Peeling the peaches is optional, however it does makes the juice a nicer looking color. You could also strain the juice after you blend it since it’s quite thick. Feel free to use fresh or frozen fruit. Turn this into a mocktail by topping off your juice with some sparkling water or ginger beer.
